Roma 1-0 Chievo: Rudi Garcia's Side Set New League Record

AS Roma set a new Serie A record for most successive wins to start a league campaign, as they beat Chievo 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday.

In a game they largely dominated, it took until the 67th minute for Rudi Garcia's side to get the goal they needed to confirm the new record—Marco Borriello bursting in front of his man to head home Alessandro Florenzi's weighted cross.

Over the course of the contest the home side extended the time it has been since they last conceded in the league to 11 hours, but it was getting a goal at the other end that the home side were preoccupied with.

For large parts of the contest it looked like it would not come, with Borriello, Daniele de Rossi and Kevin Strootman all denied with attempts from different distances. But it was Borriello—the man asked to take on the mantle during the absence of Francesco Totti—who grabbed a crucial first goal for the club.

Roma, unsurprisingly, remain top of Serie A with the win—five points clear with a perfect 30 points. Chievo, alas, still sit bottom.

Fiorentina 1-2 Napoli

Guiseppe Rossi scored his Serie-A leading eighth goal of the 2013-14 campaign for Fiorentina on Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough as La Viola fell 2-1 to Napoli in a fascinating midweek contest.

All the scoring came in the first half and began when Jose Callejon beat Neto after just 12 minutes, accepting Gonzalo Higuain’s pass before finishing cleanly inside the near post with his right foot.

Rossi equalized shortly before the half-hour mark from the penalty spot after Federico Fernandez’ foul on Stefan Savic inside the area, but with nine minutes left in the opening period Dries Mertens scored what proved to be the winner, with Higuain again picking up the assist.

The referee took centre stage in the second half as both Christian Maggio and Juan Cuadrado were ejected inside the final 10 minutes.

Two goals on either side of the break saw Juventus thump Catania 4-0 in Turin and keep pace with Napoli for second spot in Serie A, two points behind idle Roma.

In-form Arturo Vidal opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a confident finish to the bottom corner after picking up a pass from Carlos Tevez, and just eight minutes later Andrea Pirlo doubled the hosts’ advantage with a spectacular free kick that beat goalkeeper Mariano Andujar to his top, left-hand corner.

Tevez padded the Bianconeri’s advantage shortly after the hour-mark after a good combination play with Fernando Llorente, and with 19 minutes remaining Leonardo Bonucci scored a rare goal following Sebastian Giovinco’s corner.

Kaka turned back the clock with a goal for AC Milan but Michael Ciani equalized for Lazio with 18 minutes remaining as the underachieving Serie A giants settled for a share of the points at the San Siro on Wednesday.

Kaka, who re-joined the Rossoneri in the summer after a four-year spell at Real Madrid, found the back of the net nine minutes after the restart when, after accepting the ball from Mario Balotelli, he lashed a shot from outside the area that beat goalkeeper Federico Marchetti to the top, right-hand corner of the goal.

Milan’s lead was short-lived, however, as Ciani’s header from Antonio Candreva’s delivery beat Gabriel from in close in the 72nd minute.

Sassuolo 1-2 Udinese

Udinese climbed to eighth spot in Serie A thanks to a 2-1 win away to promoted Sassuolo, Wednesday.

The guests opened the scoring in the 18th minute after Reto Ziegler fouled Dusan Basta inside the area, sending Antonio Di Natale to the spot.

The Udinese legend would make no mistake from 12 yards as he put his side in front.

Sassuolo settled quickly, however, and were back on level terms just seven minutes later thanks to Simone Zaza, whose left-footed effort to conclude a counter-attack evaded Udinese ‘keeper Zeljko Brkic, who was otherwise spectacular on the night.

The guests got their winner shortly before the hour-mark when Luis Muriel found the bottom, right-hand corner of the goal, and with 10 minutes remaining Zaza was ejected as Udinese played out the string.
