Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel was scheduled to defend his title against Big E Langston during Sunday's WWE Hell in a Cell pre-show kickoff, but the match has been canceled due to an injury suffered by the third-generation Superstar, according to WWE's official Twitter account.

The nature of Axel's injury was not revealed, but speculation regarding the status of Axel and Langston began to ramp up on Sunday as all mention of their match was removed from WWE's website, per Chris Cash of WrestleZone.com.

The match was replaced by Kofi Kingston vs. Damien Sandow on the match card, per WWE.com.

Axel has held the IC title since winning a triple-threat match over The Miz and Wade Barrett at Payback in June. Big things were expected of Axel under the tutelage of Paul Heyman, but a lack of charisma has been his undoing to this point.

Langston and Axel began feuding just over a week ago after CM Punk defeated Langston on SmackDown. Heyman called Langston a marginal talent, which led to Big E challenging Axel to a match on Raw.

Axel and Ryback proceeded to jump Langston instead, so a title match was set for Hell in a Cell. Depending on the severity of Axel's injury, his angle with Langston figures to continue when he is ready to return, but the Intercontinental Championship will not change hands on Sunday night regardless.
