Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma: Spread Analysis and Pick Prediction
Oklahoma has been terrible the past two weeks while Texas Tech has been surging into the AP Top 10. Some handicappers see both patterns reversing this week, while the OddsShark.com computer is predicting the Red Raiders will win outright as road underdogs.
Point spread: Oklahoma opened as seven-point favorites; the total was 58.5 as of Wednesday. (Line updates and Matchup report)
Computer Prediction: 45-37 Texas Tech
Why the Red Raiders can cover the spread
Don't look now, but Texas Tech is back in the Top 10 of the Associated Press poll sporting a 7-0 mark after last weekend's 37-27 win at West Virginia. The Red Raiders offense is ranked sixth overall in the nation, led by the No. 2 passing game in the land. Tech has won six of its seven games by double digits.
The Red Raiders don’t have to deal with injured linebacker Corey Nelson, whose loss has coincided with Oklahoma’s recent swoon.
Why the Sooners can cover the spread
If there is one team that can challenge Texas Tech's passing game, it would be the Sooners. No team in the nation has a better pass defense than Oklahoma, which has held its seven opponents to a meager 149.7 yards per game through the air. Last weekend the Sooners held Kansas to only 16 passing yards on five completions.
The high-powered Red Raiders are going to give OU's defense its toughest challenge to date, and there's no question there. But the fact Oklahoma's defense has fared well against Tech in the last three meetings between the two squads—and this one takes place in Norman—certainly means you have to give the nod to the Sooners.
Even if the computer is predicting the upset.
Texas Tech is 1-7 SU in its last eight games at Oklahoma.
Oklahoma is 2-6 ATS in its last eight games at home.
