Ben Tate Injury: Updates on Texans RB's Ribs, Likely Return Date
Arian Foster isn't their only running back who is banged up for the Houston Texans
According to the Houston Chronicle's John McClain, backup Ben Tate is currently dealing with several broken ribs:
RB Ben Tate just told AP he has 4 broken ribs but expects to play after bye. Foster and Tate are injured and they need another RB.— John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL) October 21, 2013
He is active for Week 9.
Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle has an update on Ben Tate's health after playing Sunday night vs. Indianapolis:
It hurts pretty bad, man,” Tate said.
The four broken ribs he played with left him walking lightly Monday, saying it’s “hard to breathe and laugh.”
“I like to tell jokes. … Maybe by Friday,” said Tate, who plans to play Sunday at Arizona.
From ESPN's Tania Ganguli:
Kubiak says everybody participated in practice today. Says Ben Tate will be listed as limited. #Texans— Tania Ganguli (@taniaganguli) October 31, 2013
"What Ben attempted to do for the team two weeks ago was incredible," Kubiak says. #Texans— Tania Ganguli (@taniaganguli) October 31, 2013
From CSN Houston's James Palmer:
Ben Tate was a little sore today. Didn't have to sit. Took some reps. Kubiak called him playing against chiefs "incredible." #Texans— James Palmer (@JPalmerCSN) October 31, 2013
Deepi Sidhu of HoustonTexans.com has the latest comments from Tate on his injury:
“I already know it’s not going to feel good tomorrow,” Tate said Wednesday. “I think it’s more about just getting ready for Sunday, seeing where I’ll be at on Sunday.”
“I want to help this team make a turnaround,” Tate said. “We haven’t been living up to our standards this year and I’m all in and I believe that we can turn this thing around.”
From Kevin Bowen of Colts.com:
Gary Kubiak on Indy conference call said Arian Foster and Ben Tate will be "very limited" at today's practice, likely game-time decisions— Kevin Bowen (@KBowenColts) October 30, 2013
From ESPN's Tania Ganguli:
Arian Foster and Ben Tate did not practice today. #Texans— Tania Ganguli (@taniaganguli) October 28, 2013
James Palmer of CSNHouston.com followed:
Ben Tate, the third-year running back out of Auburn, is averaging just 11.7 touches per game through the first seven weeks of the season, but don't let that fool you—Tate would be starting for a large majority of other NFL teams.
Tate is explosive, averaging 4.8 yards per carry in 2012 and 5.0 for his career, and it wouldn't be a stretch to call him one of the best backup running backs in the league.
With Foster dealing with hamstring issues, per ESPN's Tania Ganguli, Tate becomes even more important for the struggling 2-5 Texans.
Houston hosts the AFC South-leading Indianapolis Colts in Week 9, so getting the 25-year-old playmaker healthy over the next week will be vital.
The team's third running back, rookie Cierre Wood, was unexpectedly cut on Monday due to violation of team rules, per McClain.
