St. Louis Rams Have Reportedly Discussed Signing Tim Tebow

Austin GreenCorrespondent IOctober 21, 2013

After falling to the Carolina Panthers in Week 7 and watching starting quarterback Sam Bradford exit with a knee injury in the process, the St. Louis Rams' front office have reportedly considered signing free-agent quarterback Tim Tebow.

Mike Silver of NFL.com reported the news on Sunday.

I believe it's unlikely they'll actually sign him. RT @NFL_ATL From @MikeSilver: Rams have discussed signing Tim Tebow. Post to come.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch followed:

Contrary to speculation, Tim Tebow is not coming to St. Louis.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN confirmed that report and added Vince Young to the list of quarterbacks that will not be coming to St. Louis:

Rams will look at a handful of quarterbacks but you can exclude Tim Tebow and Vince Young from that list.

Tebow, 26, played for the New England Patriots in the preseason, but was released on Aug. 31.

The Rams are clearly desperate after losing Sam Bradford to a knee injury on Sunday. Bradford was carted off the field late in the fourth quarter of the Rams' 30-15 loss to the Panthers, and he is scheduled to have an MRI Sunday night.

The Rams' discussions shouldn't be considered a total shock, as they expressed interest in Tebow back in 2012. However, this news will likely trigger a collective groan from Rams Nation.

Tebow has shown little improvement since he was selected 25th overall by the Denver Broncos in the 2010 NFL draft. His career completion percentage of 47.9 is atrocious, and he was used more as a runner than a passer (32 rush attempts, eight pass attempts) in his most recent regular-season gig with the New York Jets

However, the Rams are left with few viable options after Bradford's injury. They turned to backup Kellen Clemens against the Panthers, but the eighth-year man from Oregon likely isn't a capable long-term solution.

In 30 career appearances heading into Week 7, Clemens had completed just 51.9 percent of his passes and tossed almost twice as many interceptions (13) as touchdowns (seven). He went 2-of-4 for 19 yards in his limited action against Carolina.

At any rate, St. Louis will need to figure out something, and fast. The Rams square off against the 6-1 Seattle Seahawks in a Week 8 divisional showdown, so whoever lines up under center will have a huge challenge on his hands. The Rams are 3-4 and are losing ground in the NFC West.
