When is a goal not really a goal? Let's ask Stefan Kiessling, shall we?
Kiessling was credited with a goal Friday evening as his Bayer Leverkusen won 2-1 at Hoffenheim to (briefly, at least) take over top spot in the Bundesliga. Upon further inspection, though, it wasn't really a goal.
Here's what happened.
In the 70th minute, Gonzalo Castro took a corner on the left, and Kiessling headed the ball toward Hoffenheim's goal. The ball flew outside Koen Casteels' post and into the side netting for what should have been a goal kick.
Instead, the referee awarded a goal.
Replays confirmed that the ball entered the goal via the side netting and should not have been awarded.
Kiessling initially showed disappointment with the miss before joining his teammates in a muted celebration.
