MLB, New York Mets, Washington Nationals, Game Recap

Carlos Beltrán's first home run.  José Reyes' first jack.

John Maine, another solid start.

Two-and-a-third shutout innings by the Mets' shaky bullpen.

Victory.

Keep it up and you'll be looking at the rest of the NL East in the rear view mirror.

The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 5-2 on a warm Wednesday night at Shea (April 16th).

Reyes, Beltrán, and Ryan Church all connected for home runs to lead the Mets' offense to a solid five-run performance.

John Maine (1-1) pitched well yet again, allowing five hits and four walks over six-and-two-thirds innings.

When Pedro Martínez injured himself during his first start, one of the keys for the Mets was to have another starter step up.  Maine has certainly done that.  In all of his three starts, the Mets have been in the game.

Aaron Heilman squandered the 3-0 lead Heilman handed to him last time, but on this night, Joe Smith struck out Nats' slugger Ryan Zimmerman on a nasty slider to end the final threat posed by Washington.

Billy Wagner picked up his second save of the year, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth.

Good pitching plus good hitting has always been a recipe for success.  The Mets did both tonight, and have moved back above .500.

Hopefully they won't look back.
