Breaking Down 5-Star RB Sony Michel's Highlight Tape

0 of 6

Sony Michel is not only one of the best running backs in the country, but also one of the best overall players. He is a fantastic 5-star prospect who has a bright future ahead of him.

Michel, who has completely gotten past a knee injury suffered a few seasons ago, is 5'11" and a chiseled 205 pounds. He possesses great speed, quickness, agility, instincts, vision and also has the hands to be an asset in the passing game.

Michel displays his talent so impressively on his highlight film that it warrants a closer look.

Player evaluations are based on review of tape at Scout.comRivals247Sports and ESPNU.

On the initial play of Michel's highlight tape, which was put together by the Full Ride video team, he is seen in a short-yardage, goal-line situation.

Michel shows excellent toughness and explosion at the point of attack. He sticks his foot in the ground, lowers his pads, protects the football and challenges the defender in the hole. Michel uses his strength to carry the tackler in the end zone, which proves he's more than a speed-runner.

On his second carry of the highlight tape, Michel again exhibits good tackle-breaking ability.

It would be preferred that he had stuck his foot in the ground and exploded laterally away from the first defender, but Michel impresses with his solid strength, nonetheless.

He then races upfield, where his elusiveness and balance come into play. Michel sees that a threat has an angle on him, so he throttles down, puts his hand in the dirt to balance himself and attempts to spin back into space.

This is a classic example of a running back having the ability to get out of traffic in an alley.

Michel shows solid hole-discipline on a draw play. But the lane gets clogged, and he should be stopped for a loss.

However, he quickly maneuvers out of traffic and uses his great quickness to elude another defender. Michel then weaves around to get to the perimeter and displays a solid burst to get upfield to arrive in the end zone.

After watching this play, it's now clear that Michel's balance, strength and toughness are underrated.

He takes a pitch on a sweep, attacks the perimeter versus tremendous pursuit, and the edge looks to be breached.

Michel somehow has the presence of mind, and vision, to hurdle the fallen defender and takes a shot from another defensive player as he lands. Many running backs would not have the balance and athleticism to stay on their feet during a hit like this, especially in this type of position.

However, Michel shows why he has 5-star traits as he absorbs the hit, stays on his feet and gets to the perimeter. The Georgia commit then turns the corner and smoothly transfers upfield.

On this play, Michel shows his ability to see the cut-back hole. He presses to the edges, but his instincts and awareness lead him to look inside.

He then simply displays exceptional quickness to and through the hole, as the acceleration Michel shows is noticeable.

Another impressive aspect to this run is how Michel cuts at full speed on the third level.
