Five College Football Teams That Will Dominate in 2009
Everybody's doing it—so here's a look at my way too early top five. I'm anxious to see how these predictions play out on the field, but they are based solely on how I feel right now about the teams in question.
Yes, I have Florida No. 1. Anyone who doesn't shouldn't be reading this. Some of my other choices may surprise some of you. I've also included a look at my overall top 10 for 2009.
What's not to love if you're a Gators fan? If you don't have the Gators as No. 1 in your way-too-early, then something tells me you're some sort of homer.
Talent. Talent. Talent. Here's an idea: How about we take a team and put it out in California right where the beautiful people stay? Then let's try to recruit a lot of guys around the age of 18 or so to come live there for four years. Then let's give them a genius of a football coach to run the show.
Yeah, that sounds good to me.
USC is No. 2 on my list because I have a feeling things will keep on rollin' in L.A.
Texas is returning a lot of players. They'll be missing their entire front four on their defensive line, but they look to be able to replace them fairly well. Colt McCoy showed in the Fiesta Bowl game that his grit and determination mean that any game they are close in will go down to the wire.
I like Texas as No. 3.
The Sooners bring back not only Sam Bradford, but also return their tight end Jermaine Gresham. Both of those guys could be playing on Sundays this season. Look for Oklahoma to light up the scoreboard this season.
Laugh if you want to. Yeah, they got lambasted by the Tigers at the end of last season, but this team is for real. They return their entire backfield, which is scary considering the numbers they put up last season, and they've had an entire year more to work on the system.
The triple option is a complex thing, but when it's humming, it's tough to defend. Since teams don't see it often, it has the same advantages that the spread offenses had when they first started showing up on the scene.
I'm watching to see how the Jackets do this fall and expect them to shock some people and turn some heads.
