Deion Sanders Fired by Prime Prep Academy After Assault Accusations Emerge
Christina Rosales of The Dallas Morning News reports Dallas police are currently looking into the claims made by Kevin Jefferson after an encounter during a faculty meeting. Sanders was apparently upset about the poor class performance by some of the school's athletes.
Jefferson spoke with The News' Tanya Eiserer and said a verbal argument led to Sanders confronting him, at which point the former football player grabbed him by the throat and pushed him to the ground before other people in the meeting stepped in:
He walked back to the back of the classroom to where I was sitting in a desk. As he got closer to me, I stood up because he was kind of standing over me and he just kind of kept talking to me and at me and then he just grabbed me by my throat and kind of threw me to the ground. Some people had to get him off of me.
UPDATE: Friday, Oct. 11
According to Ryan Wood of WFAA in Dallas, Deion has been fired by Prime Academy:
Former Dallas Cowboy Deion Sanders fired from Dallas-area charter school Prime Prep Academy. #wfaanews— Ryan Wood (@RyanWoodDFW) October 11, 2013
DEION FIRED: Statement from Prime Prep's president -- " Deion Sanders is no longer an employee or representative for Prime Prep Academy."— Ryan Wood (@RyanWoodDFW) October 11, 2013
The charter school employee said he went to the hospital after the incident and then contacted police. He also told the paper he plans on pursuing his options with an attorney.
After news broke about the assault claims, Sanders took to Twitter to deny he assaulted Jefferson during the meeting:
Its alot of ignorance & lies circulating in DFW right now. Please know I stand for kids, teachers & Parents whom trusted me with their child.— DeionSanders (@DeionSanders) October 10, 2013
Sanders confirmed a disagreement occurred between himself and Jefferson during the staff session, but stated the assault assertions are false:
I won't sit&witness my PrimePrep kids receive 2nds when they deserve the BEST EDUCATION!There was NO assault but a definite confrontation.— DeionSanders (@DeionSanders) October 10, 2013
Now it's up to police to investigate the situation and determine where the truth lies, because it's clear Sanders and Jefferson have starkly different views of what happened after the initial argument.
Rosales' report states other administrators and teachers were in the meeting, which should help when it comes to piecing together the situation and determining exactly what took place.
In the report, Jefferson didn't say what injuries, if any, were discovered during his trip to the hospital.
