In a blog recently posted on the Chicago Sun-Times web site, it was reported that Deion Sanders (who is a personal friend of Devin Hester's) made an appearance on the NFL Network's Total Access, and among the topics discussed was Devin Hester's apparent dislike of his current contract situation in Chicago.
Hester now joins Brian Urlacher and Tommie Harris, two other stellar players attempting to negotiate new contracts.
Is it really surprising that he is discontent with his current situation?
Hester is arguably the most beloved (and perhaps talented) player sitting on the Bears roster right now, and his ability to change the outcome of a game is fully understood.
With the wide receiver position left for dead, it can be almost guaranteed that Hester will get as many chances to strut his stuff on the offensive side of the ball. He did well last year, and he will only continue to be the playmaker we already know he is.
So with the prospect of being a more utilized weapon in the passing game as well as being the special team phenom, why shouldn't he be paid for being a hybrid?
However, Chicago may not be in any rush to address this issue. Hester still has another two years to fulfill his rookie contract, and, in Urlacher's case, the Chicago front office has decided to "educate" him on the value of his current monetary situation.
The Bears have a history with being frugal with their money, but let's hope they don't get into a Lance Briggs-esque quagmire here- with an intimidating road schedule, the last thing Chicago needs is the Windy City Flyer hitting turbulence.
Pay him the money, Chicago. Keep this guy happy.
