The Patriots' typically explosive offense was hardly more effective than a wet firecracker during Sunday's loss to the Bengals. Inconsistency was the main issue, and the Patriots' 11 failures on 12 third downs, including all five chances in the second half, did enough to tell that story. That's why they never racked up more than two offensive first downs (excluding penalties) on any of their dozen possessions.
