Clay Matthews Injury: How Star LBs Injury Impacts Green Bay Moving Forward
Green Bay Packers star outside linebacker Clay Matthews had a massive day in Week 5 against the Detroit Lions as he recorded a sack and five total tackles on his way to a 22-9 victory for his team in the NFC North.
Unfortunately for Matthews and Co. not all news coming out of the victory was good news as NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Matthews broke his thumb during the game:
Tough one for #Packers: Source says Clay Matthews broke his thumb today. What's not known is how long he'll be out.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 6, 2013
As Rapoport details, it is hard to know how much time Matthews will miss, if any. Matthews was already on the injury radar leading up to the clash with Detroit for a tender hamstring, which is an issue that has consistently plagued Matthews.
It would be a crushing blow for the Packers to miss Matthews and rely on late-round rookie Nate Palmer to replicate his pass rush. Matthews has notched four sacks this season and was well on his way to matching his 13 from a year ago.
Matthews is a key component of the Green Bay defense, so the Packers' faithful better hope the issue does not hold him out for an extended period of time.
