Zac Stacy Injury: Benny Cunningham Must Be on Fantasy Radar
St. Louis Rams running back Zac Stacy was a feel-good fantasy football story for Week 5, rushing for 78 yards on just 14 carries in a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Unfortunately, the former Vanderbilt star—who was also making his first career start, as reported by NFL.com's Ian Rapoport—suffered a rib injury late in the game. ESPN's Nick Wagoner had the news on Twitter:
Zac Stacy has rib injury. Return questionable (probably unlikely at this point).— Nick Wagoner (@nwagoner) October 6, 2013
If Stacy is forced to miss any extended time for the Rams, Benny Cunningham is most likely player to benefit from that absence. That makes him a player worth owning in most formats as St. Louis sorts out its RB situation.
Even before the events of Sunday unfolded, ESPN's Matthew Berry was on the Cunningham train:
If I had to pick one Rams RB, I'm going Benny Cunningham, but that's a guess. Obviously not ideal situation. Hopefully we get more clarity.— Matthew Berry (@MatthewBerryTMR) October 2, 2013
Now, Cunningham, Daryl Richardson and Isaiah Pead could all be in line for increased carries pending amount of time Stacy misses.
Since Richardson (2.7 yards per carry entering Sunday's game) has been ineffective as a starter and Pead has just seven total carries this season, it would appear that Cunningham has an inside track on carving out a role for himself in the offense.
He finished with four carries for 13 yards against the Jags.
The RB situation in St. Louis is dicey at best, but Cunningham has potential and is worth a roster spot in deep leagues. Don't vault him to starter status yet, but don't ignore him if RB is a position of need and you can afford to take a chance.
