Participating in the MLB playoffs for the first time since 2009, the Boston Red Sox walloped the Tampa Bay Rays, 12-2, on Friday afternoon in Game 1 of the ALDS.
Matt Moore and the Rays pitching staff combined to allow 20 baserunners, and the fielders committed several blatant miscues in a disastrous fourth inning. Every Red Sox position player contributed at least one hit and one run scored.
Of all Boston's stars, left-hander Jon Lester shined brightest. Despite early-inning home runs by Tampa Bay's Sean Rodriguez and Ben Zobrist, the durable veteran completed 7.2 innings. He used 114 pitches, a handful of which clocked in at 95 mph or higher.
In the Wild-Card Era, more than two-thirds of the teams to take a 1-0 lead in the Division Series ultimately advanced to the next round.
These AL East rivals battle again at Fenway Park on Saturday. First pitch will be approximately 5:37 p.m. ET.
