World Football, EPL, Manchester United, Ronaldo, Owen Hargreaves, Editorial

Everybody that has been following the EPL this season and has been following Manchester United surely has been impressed by Christiano Ronaldo’s free kicks, the way that he strikes the ball and makes it go up and down the wall beating goalkeepers has been his secret recipe this season, nobody can imitate his technique, which seem to work half of the time.

What is his secret?

Nobody knows and it's been a subject of discussion everywhere, including here at Bleacher Report.

However, Christiano Ronaldo isn’t the only free kick taker at United. Of course, many would quickly think of Ryan Giggs as a second free kick taker because of his left foot, but this season a new talent was found in United’s squad, an Englishman called Owen Hargreaves.

The newly signed player from Bayern Munich has been more than impressive in his first season at our beloved club. His presence in the midfield has helped United control games while quickly switching from defense to offence.

Hargreaves has been even more impressive with his free kicks. All the free kicks that I have seen him take were very well placed and required a great save from the goalkeeper, and he even managed to score two amazing ones, most recently against Arsenal, a game that saw United come back from a 1-0 loss to post a 2-1 victory thanks to Ronaldo’s penalty and an amazing free kick from Owen Hargreaves that left Lehmann amazed, so much so that he didn’t move or even attempt to go for the save.

The shot went perfectly over the wall and into the back of the net.

So now I ask you this: "Who would you want to see taking United’s next free kick?"

  1. I believe Hargreaves has not been so impressive. His last two games have been brilliant but before that he had been just another squad player this season.

Impressive seasons are not made in 2 games. It's great he is finally showing a glimpse of form however.

  2. I've always been a fan of Hargreaves, since I avidly follow Bayern Munich. However, I was iffy about his move to England. At the same time I was hopeful that playing in the EPL would make him an even better player, teaching him to adapt to the English game and relying less on the wing play that is a mainstay of the German game.

His first season at Old Trafford has been short of spectacular, but I'm sure he will pick it up next season. And like you said Andrew, 2 games will not define a season. It's great that every person on that squad has a role to play. And they play it well, be it in a supporting cast or full time role.

  3. I agree with both of you that hargreaves only recently started showing his play, but what i was going for in this article is free kicks rather than performances.....

  8. What the.... why did it post that many post ??? how can i delete ?

  9. Hargreaves has no way been impressive this season. On your point, he definetely can take 'em...its always good to have a variety of freekick candidates so the opposition is left guessing..

  10. Oops sorry Ziad I totally forgot to address the issue on hand here! I meant to though.

I like the fact that we have three players that can take quality kicks. And the game against Arsenal showed us exactly why.

By the way I wonder if anyone watching the game knew he was going to take the kick. I knew because Ronaldo didn't set the ball...and he usually does if he is kicking it.

  11. Ronaldo's better from distance but when it's closer to the penalty area Hargreaves ought to take the free-kicks. His precision is excellent, as he showed the world against Arsenal.
Ronaldo wouldn't even let him take a free-kick earlier in the game too. He told Hargreaves it was too far out for him.

  12. I disagree that Hargreaves hasn't been impressive at times. His first 3 games he was voted MOM on Man United official website foreach game.He has been average of late due mostly to injury but he has had more than the 2 very good games of late. Also let Hargreaves take the shorter free kicks and Ronaldo the longer ones.

  13. YEah i have to agree, ronaldo technique works if the ball is like 25M away from goal, from short range it doesnt work( unless he shoots in under the wall, lol!!!) hargreaves has great precision so yeah i have to agree long: CR, short: Hargreaves

  14. cristiano ronaldo is the best
