Manchester City vs Bayern Munich: Champions League Live Score, Highlights, Recap
UEFA Champions League live coverage
Manchester City 1-3 Bayern Munich
Scorers: Franck Ribery, 6' (0-1), Thomas Muller, 55' (0-2), Arjen Robben, 59' (0-3), Alvaro Negredo, 80' (1-3)
Sent off: Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich)
Man City: Hart, Richards, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy, Toure, Fernandinho, Navas, Nasri (Milner), Aguero (Silva), Dzeko (Negredo).
Bayern: Neuer, Rafinha, Dante, Boateng, Alaba, Ribery (Gotze), Lahm, Schweinsteiger (Kirchoff), Kroos, Robben (Xhaqiri), Muller.
So City's incredible late comeback didn't quite materialise, and Bayern have in truth been more than worthy winners. Ribery, Muller and Robben got the goals for them before Negredo's late consolation, with Boateng's late red card a minor complication for Pep Guardiola.
That moves Bayern to six points in the group, with City still on three. It's far from a disastrous defeat as far as qualification goes, with City knowing they'll have to outperform CSKA Moscow over the six games for the chance to progress.
That's it for the live commentary for tonight, thanks very much as always for joining me and be sure to check out the site over the next hour or two for all our post-game reaction from the Champions League. Thanks again, see you next time!
Manchester City 1-3 Bayern Munich
Well it's been a really good, vibrant 10 minutes from Man City, but unfortunately after being comprehensively outplayed for the preceding 80, they are going to lose this match.
Three minutes added on
OFF THE BAR! Toure leaves it, Silva curls it, and smacks the ball off the Bayern crossbar!! So close to 3-2, but Bayern keep their two-goal lead.
86'—Toure is taking the free kick himself...
RED CARD! Boateng is sent off for fouling Yaya Toure as the last man, right on the edge of the box! Is there really a late, incredible turnaround in this match?!
Bayern sub: Ribery off, Mario Gotze on
84'—After much argumentative jostling, Ribery gets to take a free kick—but puts it straight into the wall. Just about in the final five minutes now.
81'—Seems that the home fans sense something. They're up and cheering their team forward and roaring them toward goal. Less than 10 minutes left; surely there's nothing here for them but defeat? Or is there..?!
Well, that's something for City. Negredo spins in the box and lashes a low shot into the corner, off the post and finding the back of the net. Neuer hasn't had too much to do but he's been beaten now.
City 1 Bayern 3
Alvaro Negredo, 79 mins
Bayern sub: Robben off, having broken a Champions League record tonight in scoring in five in a row, and Xherdan Shaqiri comes on.
76'—OFF THE POST! Bayern almost get a fourth as Muller sees one shot blocked by Hart and then his second effort crack back off the woodwork. At the other end, Neuer is forced to make his first save of the night after Milner's high shot is tipped over.
Bayern sub: Schweinsteiger off, Jan Kirchoff on. This is his Champions League debut, having signed from Mainz in the summer.
75'—Ribery streaks forward down the left channel and rifles in a shot from the edge of the box, but Hart makes a comfortable save this time. Milner catches Rafinha late with an obvious trip and is booked.
72'—City try to break forward in numbers for once but the time for that has long gone. Clichy has taken a bit of a knock too, but he'll have to carry on—that's all three City subs used.
Double City sub: Aguero and Nasri off, Milner and Silva on
67'—Kroos and Schweinsteiger have controlled this match in the middle, but every time City threaten to break over the halfway line with the ball, it's Lahm who makes the interception, the challenge or simply runs the opposition player off the ball. What an immense performance.
62'—City all over the show here, and with 30 minutes still to go they need to be careful they don't get absolutely hammered. Robben links up again down the right channel, flicks it in to Muller and when his shot is saved, Robben hammers over the rebound.
It's all over now for sure. Kroos makes the challenge high in midfield and immediately releases Robben on the right flank. He cuts in, waltzes past Nastasic who fails to make even a semblance of a tackle, and beats Joe Hart with a right-footed shot—again inside Hart's near post. 3-0 Bayern.
City 0-3 Bayern
Arjen Robben, 59 mins
58'—City's immediate response is to change forwards, but there's simply been no service for them anyway. More in midfield is needed if they are to have any hope here.
That could well be the points heading back to Germany then, as Clichy goes to sleep and lets Muller run in behind him onto a lofted through pass. Muller controls it, rounds Hart and slots home for 2-0 to Bayern.
City sub: Negredo on for Dzeko
