Week 5 of the college football season is filled with so many good matchups that you might as well plan on sitting in front of the TV all day watching a full slate of truly great games. This week will be the perfect time for top teams to show just how good they really are and for top-ranked teams to be on upset alert.
The big game that everyone will be keeping an eye on today is the SEC matchup between No. 21 Ole Miss and No. 1 Alabama tonight at 6:30 p.m. Bo Wallace will be looking to lead the Rebels to a big upset over an Alabama team that just hasn't looked as dominant recently as many expected them to. No. 6 LSU and No. 9 Georgia will also be playing in an exciting SEC divisional game, as Zach Mettenberger will be taking on Aaron Murray.
We will look at those games and more as the day progresses, but in the meantime here's a look at some of the Hesiman contenders to watch for and a look at some of biggest injuries heading into today.
Heisman Contenders to Watch
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon vs. California
Mariota has become one of the biggest names in college football this season, leading the high-powered Oregon offense. So far this season, he already has 889 yards and seven touchdowns with zero interceptions through the air, along with 262 yards and four touchdowns on the ground in just three games. With California allowing 42 points per game, you can expect a lot of points to be scored this week.
Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M vs. Arkansas
He may be the most controversial player in college football right now, but Manziel is still making his case for his second Hesiman trophy. So far, he already has nearly 1,500 total yards and 15 total touchdowns through four games. The Razorbacks have yet to be tested this season against a ranked opponent, so this could be a blowout led by a few touchdowns by Johnny Football.
Braxton Miller, QB, Ohio State
After missing the past two games with a knee injury, it looks like there's a good chance that Miller will finally be able to return.
With how good Kenny Guiton has been, it will be interesting to see how they handle this situation, and if they'll split snaps with both players if Miller is able to play.
Taylor Martinez, QB, Nebraska
Martinez already missed last week's game against South Dakota state, and now he appears doubtful to play against Illinois.
The Cornhusker's starting QB is currently listed as doubtful to play today, as he's currently dealing with a turf toe injury. With how productive of a player Martinez is, having him sit out for another game isn't what Nebraska fans were hoping for.
Be sure to keep checking in throughout the day. We'll post updates on any key Heisman contenders, possible injuries and potential updates at the day progresses.
