Halftime Pitt 14 Virginia 0

As the month of September winds down, the ACC season begins for the Virginia Cavaliers as their hopes for a postseason bowl berth are put on the line against the Pitt Panthers.

Through three games, it is hard to make any definitive conclusions about Virginia heading into their first road contest of the 2013 season. A strong defensive performance against BYU led to a surprising victory, but an expected—but nonetheless disappointing—dismantling by Oregon showed big holes to be filled. Virginia is coming off of a lopsided victory over VMI, 49-0, but the Cavaliers cannot take pride in beating a school that has already lost to a D-II program this year.

Virginia's quarterback, David Watford, will need to play perhaps the best game of his career on Saturday if the Cavaliers want to leave victorious. The lack of a vertical passing game has put tremendous pressure on the running game to eke out wins. With five interceptions already, Virginia is ranked 118th in turnover margin and cannot afford to give up a short field in this game.

An inept offense this time around could mean another losing season for the Cavaliers.

As for the Pitt Panthers, their offense is in high gear with a combined 107 points in the past two games. Despite an impressive Virginia defense with emerging stars like Anthony Harris and Eli Harold, Pitt will pose an intimidating threat.

Their signal-caller, Tom Savage, is really the opposite of Watford. Savage is a fifth-year senior who has bounced around schools but has plenty of experience and confidence heading into this weekend.

Can Virginia's defense surprise and help the Cavaliers pull off a strong win?

Will Pitt pick up a needed home win before their showdown with the Hokies next weekend?

We are about to find out!
