A basketball powerhouse that no one seems to remember until facing them, the Memphis Grizzlies have quietly bulked up again.

With one of the league's toughest starting fives in Mike Conley, Tony Allen, Tayshaun Prince, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, the Grizzlies have been able to tangle with anyone and everyone. Yet, the defensive juggernaut has long struggled to match outside firepower and overall athleticism with the elite.

By adding Kosta Koufos, Jamaal Franklin and Mike Miller to incumbents Ed Davis, Quincy Pondexter and Jerryd Bayless, Memphis is banking on a stronger bench with deeper range. They'll need it, as their Western Conference den mates are loaded for bear after this offseason.

Can the Grizzlies score more while keeping their lock-down identity? Do they finally have the depth to withstand regular-season injuries? Is Zach Randolph part of the immediate and long-term future? Is Memphis really still among the NBA's title-chasing powers?

Grizzlies Featured Columnist Tom Firme joins assistant editors Joel C. Cordes for the latest episode of Basketball by Association.
