Top Storyline: Boise State Defense Reeling in 2013
Boise State ranked eighth in the nation in points allowed per game last season, but the Broncos rank 78th in that category this season.
Boise State, which lost cornerback Jamar Taylor and five other defensive starters in the offseason, allowed Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr to explode for 460 yards and four touchdowns en route to a 41-40 loss last week. That included allowing the Bulldogs to march 87 yards downfield for the winning touchdown with 2:14 remaining.
The Broncos will likely be good enough defensively to beat Southern Miss on Saturday, but it's all about improving from week to week at this point.
Prediction: Boise State 38, Southern Miss 13
Who will win on Saturday?
How bad is Southern Miss?
Well, the Golden Eagles lost their 15th straight game last week and rank among the bottom 25 in the nation on offense and defense. They're also ranked 117th in the Massey Ratings, a composite of rankings from across the country.
They are a bad football team, and I don't mean they are tough.
Boise State has its issues defensively this season, but the Broncos held Air Force to 20 points. There's no reason why they can't do better against Southern Miss.
