It's no secret that most sports fans would probably love to be Miami Heat superstar LeBron James. King James is a two-time NBA champion and four-time NBA MVP, and he is already one of the greatest players in the history of the game.
None of us will ever be LeBron, but you can come pretty close in NBA 2K14.
James is the new video game's cover boy, and for good reason. The newest feature mode in NBA 2K14 is called "Path to Greatness." In this mode, gamers will be able to control James and decide whether to help him build a dynasty with the Heat or sign with another team in free agency, according to Brett Molina of USA Today.
LeBron is one of the most polarizing figures in sports, thanks largely to his decision to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Heat in 2010. The move has been a fruitful one for James as he has reached the NBA Finals three times and won two titles, but it rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.
NBA 2K14 will allow gamers to rectify the situation if they so desire. Preventing LeBron from leaving another team high and dry is possible, as is returning James to Cleveland so he can take care of the unfinished business he left behind upon signing with the Heat.
The NBA 2K games always have excellent gameplay, but their featured modes truly take the cake. It really started with NBA 2K11 and Michael Jordan. Gamers were able to replicate great moments from MJ's career, and they could also take control of Jordan as a rookie and guide him to greatness.
This year's LeBron mode is quite similar as gamers are asked to play certain games rather than going through entire seasons, according to Molina. This keeps things fresh and ensures that there is a great deal of replayability.
Even if you finish the Path to Greatness mode, it's almost as if you're only half done, since you can take the opposite approach and complete it all over again. People who are on the fence about buying video games often worry about getting tired of the game after playing it a few times, but Path to Greatness ensures that won't happen.
Realism is of the utmost importance in any video game these days, and NBA 2K14 certainly provides that. Path to Greatness essentially allows gamers to alter reality. It's impossible to say what James will do when he becomes a free agent after the upcoming season, but NBA 2K14 provides an opportunity to test out the best possibilities.
In addition to that, LeBron is easily the most fun player to utilize in the game as he is nearly unstoppable. He is one of the most versatile players in NBA history, and that is apparent in NBA 2K14. The 99-rated superstar can drive to the hoop, shoot threes, play with his back to the basket, pass with precision, play shutdown defense and do just about anything imaginable.
LeBron fans simply can't ask for anything more. Even LeBron haters can have their fun, too, by forcing James to sign with the Charlotte Bobcats and endure years of mediocrity. No matter what side of the fence you reside on when it comes to James, NBA 2K14 gives you a chance to do whatever you want with him.
This type of control is fairly unprecedented in video games, so there is little doubt that Path to Greatness mode will go down in history as a revolutionary addition to the NBA 2K series. There is no way an NBA fan or avid sports gamer can pass up the opportunity to be a part of something special.
While NBA 2K is excellent on a yearly basis, Path to Greatness mode may very well make NBA 2K14 the greatest basketball video game of all time.
