Professional Golfer Pawel Japol Shoots 109 in European Challenge Tour Event
The inaugural Kharkov Superior Cup in Kharkiv, Ukraine has garnered far more headlines than usual for a European Challenge Tour event.
Former European Footballer of the Year Andriy Shevchenko and former world No. 1 tennis player Yevgeny Kafelnikov are in the field at the Superior Golf Club and Spa Resort, but Poland's Pawel Japol has stolen the show after an astonishing opening round of 109.
Japol started on the 10th and was doing alright at one over after three holes, but then he dropped 18 shots in four holes with a 13, nine, seven and six. He threw in a 10 at the fifth before triple bogeys at No. 7 and No. 8, leading to his finish of 37 over par—45 shots off the lead.
At least he can look on the bright side: The Golf Channel's Ryan Lavner reported that Jakub Svoboda was 21 over par after six holes of March's Hassan II Trophy, while former European Ryder Cup captain Mark James carded a 111 in the Italian Open in 1978.
Both of those guys cited injury, though, while Japol's whereabouts are currently unknown.
In comparison, former Chelsea and AC Milan striker Shevchenko carded a 12-over-par round of 84 that included a birdie on the second. Russian Kafelnikov, who won the Olympic gold medal in men’s singles tennis at the Sydney Olympics, had two birdies en route to shooting an 80.
Maybe they should speak to Japol on the range Friday morning.
