Rugby Player Hospitalized After Attacker Slams Hammer into His Head
Matthew Probert is a 21-year-old rugby player for Scunthorpe Rugby Club. Last weekend he was attacked and hospitalized after a hammer was lodged into his head.
It wasn't that he was just smashed in the head with a hammer, Probert literally got the end of a hammer stuck in the side of his head in a disturbing act of violence.
Matthew, a first team loose-head prop for Scunthorpe Rugby Club, had been on a night out in Lincoln when he was attacked at about 12.50am.
He was taken to Lincoln County Hospital before being transferred 50 miles to a specialist brain unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.
Surgeons spent an hour removing the hammer from his skull and yesterday he was described as being in a stable condition.
Some passing by the scene were greeted by the awful image of a dazed man with an object stuck in his skull. One Twitter user, Dennis Kiruai, snapped off a picture of Probert getting treatment outside the club.
We have to offer the obvious warning that the image is unsettling.
More difficult to discern is how someone could bring themselves to deliver such a blow to another human being.
Thankfully, it seems that Probert is doing as well as can be hoped. As the Daily Mail reports, Probert's girlfriend, Elisha Davis, wrote the following on her Facebook shortly after.
Just to let everyone know Matthew Probert seems to be making a good recovery, for anyone asking about visiting, hospital staff and family request no visitors for the time being but will let everyone know when he is well enough!
Probert's mother had similar sentiments, according to Rich Sharpe of the Scunthorpe Telegraph. "Thank you to each and every one of you for your messages and support for Matthew Probert. It has meant so much to me and his family knowing so many people are out there thinking of him."
She continued, "Just to let you all know Matthew Probert is doing as well as can be expected. All seems to be going well."
While there is no news of what exactly happened or what may have led to such a deplorable act, Alex Colman of the Lincolnshire Echo reports a man by the name of Kris Bradley is accused of attempted murder in the case.
A spokesperson for Probert's rugby club issued a statement that the young man is highly thought of and well-respected throughout the team, and he was absolutely shocked to hear about the incident.
Shocking is as good a term as any to describe this brutal and unsettling act. We certainly hope Probert makes a full recovery shortly.
