Real Madrid's new star, Gareth Bale, is easily the most high-profile player to switch clubs this transfer season, but the folks in charge of ratings with FIFA 14 didn't overreact to Bale's fame.
The top 50 highest-rated players in the game were released on Wednesday on the EA Sports website, and while Bale is certainly in that number, he is aptly rated an 87, which is good for a tie for 13th.
During the 2012-13 campaign, Bale scored 26 goals for Tottenham Hotspur. It was a great season, and Bale showed significant skills, but he did not do enough to leap-frog some of the more established players.
As if anyone had to guess, cover athlete Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona (94 overall) and Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid (92 overall) are the top two players. Both are so good they transcend their era in the sport, but Messi's amazing year has earned him the top spot.
He scored 46 goals in La Liga play and 75 total during the 2012-13 season.
Rounding out the top five is Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery (90 overall), Radamel Falcao of AS Monaco (90 overall) and a four-way tie for fifth. Messi's Barcelona teammates Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez, Manchester United's Robin van Persie and Paris Saint-Germain's Zlatan Ibrahimovic all have 89 overall ratings.
The three best goalkeepers in the world are undoubtedly Juventus' Gianluigi Buffon, Real Madrid's Iker Casillas and Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer. But which one deserves to be rated the highest?
The latter is rated one point lower than Buffon and Casillas, but some may believe Neuer should be considered the best since he is younger and has more promise. How significant is the point? You may find out the hard way if you chose to play online with Bayern Munich instead of Real or Juventus.
Overall, it was refreshing to see the 90 overall ratings held back from the vast majority of players in the world. Doing this made it clear who the elite players in the world are and should thus have them shine brighter on the virtual pitch.
Here's a look at all of the ratings for the top 50 players in FIFA 14.
