A friendly tip: Never play poker with Will Middlebrooks. In the fifth inning Tuesday night, Middlebrooks stroked a two-out, two-run single against Tigers ace Max Scherzer, the Cy Young Award frontrunner who was at his dominating best. And thanks to Jon Lester and the Red Sox' bullpen, it wound up being the decisive hit in a 2-1 victory that had a distinctly October feel. Yet there was Middlebrooks, stone-faced and serious as a heart attack as he answered questions about his biggest hit in four months.
