The USA women’s hockey team beat Team Canada by a score of 4-3, to earn the gold medal in the IIHF World Championships in China on Saturday.

The American women finished the tournament at 4-0-1 and also beat Canada 4-2, on Thursday to qualify for the championship game.

Can anyone remember the last time an American hockey team beat a Canadian hockey team in a tournament of this magnitude, two times in a row? Hopefully, this weekend helped to soothe the sting of disappointment the ladies suffered during the 2006 Olympics when they failed to reach the gold medal game.

Jenny Potter and Natalie Darwitz each had two goals to lead the Americans. Darwitz also had two goals in Thursday’s game and earned tournament MVP honors. Angela Ruggiero of “Apprentice” fame won the Directorate Award as the tournament’s best defenseman.

Now can the men duplicate the feat next month in Canada?
