It was a rematch almost three years in the making and finally on Saturday night Anthony Pettis and Benson Henderson got back in the cage together again—this time with the UFC lightweight title on the line.
The last time Pettis and Henderson met it was for the WEC lightweight title in that promotion's final show ever, and the two put on a fight for the ages in a back and forth war over five full rounds. That night, Pettis capped off the evening with his famous 'Showtime Kick', which helped lead him to victory over Henderson.
On Saturday in front of his hometown of Milwaukee at UFC 164, Pettis put Henderson away again, and it wasn't quite as flashy as last time, but it certainly got the job done.
As a matter of fact this time it took Pettis less than five minutes to finish off Henderson.
The two lightweight warriors knew each other very well heading into the rematch, so the first few minutes of the bout were very closely contested.
The end came just as rapidly, however, after the bout ended up on the ground with Henderson on top and Pettis quickly searching for submissions. Pettis saw an opening in Henderson's defense, and looked for an armbar. Then in just a few seconds time he had his opponent's elbow torquing in the completely wrong direction.
Just moments later, Henderson tapped out and Pettis stood proud as the victor and new champion.
