Well what a game that was. Huge United pressure in the second half, but the Reds have recorded their third straight clean sheet and 1-0 victory to take an early lead in the Premier League table. Daniel Sturridge is the match-winner again, but Liverpool's back four were superb today.
United will count themselves unlucky to not have taken something after a dominant second half, but they failed to really test Simon Mignolet enough and David Moyes suffers his first defeat as a Manchester United manager, at Anfield.
Full time at Anfield!!
Liverpool 1 Manchester United 0
90+4'—Skrtel puts a free kick out of play right beside the corner flag at United's end of the pitch. United try to get forward quickly but lose the ball the ball and Sterling drives towards goal and shoots....GOOD SAVE BY DE GEA!! The keeper has to tip it over the bar!
90+3'—Wisdom does well to hold the ball for Liverpool down the right and wins a throw in. Luis Alberto can't do the same and United have a goal kick which they will race to take. The Kop belts out You'll Never Walk Alone, urging their team over the finish line. United have 90 seconds to find their goal.
90+1'—It's so tense and tight at Anfield, with both sides' sets of supporters cranking up the volume once more as we head into added time. Liverpool still standing firm at the back and breaking with pace when they can. Sterling does well to break down the left and wins a free kick off Carrick.
90'—Jose Enrique heads the ball away...and we will have FIVE MINUTES of stoppage time!!
88'—Henderson does well to break clear for Liverpool and Sturridge holds it up well again. United really going a little more direct to get the ball forward now, so holding the ball up will be key for the home side to last out these closing stages. Lucas makes a stupid foul on Cleverley on the right edge of the area and will be booked. van Persie will take the free kick.
87'—WHAT A CHANCE! Hernandez slides the ball into the feet of van Persie, on the right edge of the six yard box and onside, but his first-time effort is a yard wide of the near post. Big chance for United.
85'—Ferdinand and De Gea get themselves into a muddle with the home side pressing high once more, and the keeper simply passes it straight out of play for a Liverpool throw. Less than five of the 90 minutes remain, but we will have a few minutes of injury time.
...but once more, a United set piece is overhit and drifts beyond everybody.
84'—Free kick to United on the right side which Nani will deliver. Plenty in the box to aim for...
Liverpool sub: Luis Alberto on for Philippe Coutinho
Not a bad introduction for Alberto; this is his Premier League debut.
81'—The ball bounces and bobbles around the edge of the Liverpool penalty box and Hernandez attempts a low drive from 20 yards, but despite it being on an angle and firmly struck, Mignolet saves well.
80'—Into the final 10 minutes of the 90 we go and United are still pressing hard for this equaliser. Liverpool aren't making the ball stick in the final third at this stage, with Coutinho in particular guilty of conceding possession too easily.
78'—Liverpool sub: Glen Johnson replaced by Andre Wisdom. Johnson has hurt his knee in that challenge on Evra a moment ago.
76'—Good save! Nani wanders infield and smacks a left-foot shot at goal from range which Mignolet has to dive across to his left to turn away from goal!
75'—Johnson goes in hard and fair on Evra and makes a crunching challenge which leaves the United left-back in a crunched up heap. Not much sympathy headed his way from the home fans.
74'—Liverpool still having to work extremely hard to have any kind of possession, but they are pressing further up the pitch now rather than holding a line on the edge of their own box for long spells at a time.
Manchester United sub: Javier Hernandez on for Giggs
72'—CLOSE! Johnson loses possession but keeps chasing the ball and very nearly gets on the end of a shocking back-pass from Vidic, before De Gea scampers out and whacks the ball clear.
71'—Valencia carries on playing, then kicks the ball out and wants treatment, which he attempts to get on the field before the ref sends him to the touchline to continue. Giggs to right-back. All very odd.
69'—Bizarre stuff on the right side as Valencia suddenly catches the ball in mid-play, claiming a poke in the eye from Sterling. Didn't look as though he was anywhere near him, but the ref signals a free kick. No replay of it yet though, may have been contact on the blind side—so to speak.
67'—Sturridge has been effective over the past five minutes or so in dropping deep to link up the ball for the Reds and hold it up, but Liverpool lacking in numbers in the final third to create much danger. Nani breaks to win a corner, and a flicked on header for Giggs forces Mignolet into a straight-forward save.
64'—Both sides giving the ball away at the moment. It's counter-attack against counter-attack and both yielding little.
