Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post reports that Purifoy and receiver Latroy Pittman are reportedly suspended due to failed drug tests:
Six Gators will be held out of the season opener due to disciplinary issues, including star cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy and backup wide receiver Latroy Pittman, who sources told The Post will sit because they failed drug tests.
The cornerback is expected to see the field on offense and special teams at times this season, and he was a preseason All-SEC selection.
In addition to Purifoy, Florida has suspended defensive tackles Darious Cummings and Jay-nard Bostwick, receiver Latroy Pittman and offensive lineman Quinteze Williams.
Purifoy is the most notable absence, and it leaves the Gators, ranked 10th, without five projected starters. One of them is linebacker Antonio Morrison, who was previously suspended for allegedly punching a bouncer, as outlined in the ESPN report.
Without the versatility of Purifoy, all three phases of the game take a hit for the Gators.
Last season, Purifoy racked up 51 total tackles, deflected five passes and forced three fumbles for a defense that yielded just seven passing touchdowns all year.
