Ben Jefferson of The Express reports that the Premier League club placed a £10 million bid for the Roma player. However, the 30-year-old veteran turned it down before his squad could make a decision:
Reports in Italy suggest that United approached Roma with the bid to bring De Rossi to England but the Italian international rejected a move after developing a good relationship with new boss Rudi Garcia.
According to Corrierre della Serra De Rossi would have been open to a move earlier in the summer but has come to appreciate the work of French boss Garcia and promised him that he would stay in Rome during the club's tour of America.
De Rossi has been with Roma for more than a decade, so it is commendable for him to want to stay with the squad. But this is not the same squad that regularly contended for the Serie A title a few years ago.
Roma was only able to finish in sixth place in the league last season, and things are not expected to be much better this time around. The club already sold Pablo Daniel Osvaldo to Southampton and Erik Lamela to Tottenham, two players who led the team in scoring last season.
This is a sinking ship that will not get better any time soon. At De Rossi's age, he needs to find a place where he can play with other talented players and try to win trophies. He can do that with Manchester United.
The defending Premier League champs are looking to defend their title while also competing in the Champions League. With Robin Van Persie and other world-class players, they will be able to do that with or without De Rossi.
Of course, the veteran would provide a lot of experience to the roster and would help the attack with his accurate passing. His addition would give the group an even better chance to win multiple trophies.
While De Rossi might enjoy playing for his new manager, he has little chance of lifting any trophies this season with Roma. He will not even get a chance to compete for a continental title this year.
In order for this transfer to go through, Manchester United would likely have to increase the bid for Roma to be interested. If the clubs were to agree, however, De Rossi should be more than willing to make the move.
He would get to face better competition on a regular basis, he would play alongside talented players and he would have a chance to challenge for some of the biggest titles in the world.
This makes completing a transfer a no-brainer for the skillful midfielder.
