Rooney Will Not Hand in Transfer Request

According to The Guardian's Jamie Jackson, Wayne Rooney has opted not to hand in a transfer request at Manchester United this summer.

The move, coupled with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's ultimatum that the striker go public with his desire to leave over the next few days, seems to end the saga that has dragged on all summer.

Rooney's decision not to force an exit from Old Trafford does not mean that he is completely happy at United or satisfied with his role, though.

As a result, Rooney staying in Manchester could just set up for more hubbub in future transfer windows.

Then again, there are still a few days left in this window for the situation to completely turn over.

This one may have a few more twists and turns left in it yet.

Chelsea Turn Attention to Other Strikers

Chelsea look set to give up on their pursuit of Wayne Rooney, as the club has started to approach other options for their striking unit.

The Daily Mail's John Drayton is reporting that the Blues are closing in on a deal that would bring in Anzhi Makhachkala star Samuel Eto'o.

The Cameroonian striker should be a perfect fit at Stamford Bridge, as he helped manager Jose Mourinho guide Inter Milan to a glorious treble in 2010.

However, the £32 million deal—Willian is also part of the reported packagewould account for all of the club's remaining budget, leaving no money with which to buy Rooney while addressing the spot that he would have filled anyway.

Could this mark the end of Chelsea's pursuit of Wayne Rooney?

Mourinho Expects Rooney to Stay

After a summer of angling for a deal that would bring Wayne Rooney to Chelsea, Jose Mourinho looks ready to give up his pursuit of the Manchester United man.

According to The Guardian's Daniel Taylor, Mourinho has admitted that Rooney will likely decide to stay at Old Trafford. "I think probably now, he decides that he wants to stay," Mourinho said after the Blues' match against United on Monday.

The Portuguese boss went on to demand that Rooney make his desire to leave public over the next few days or the deal will be off the table. He then implied that his club would be closing on a different striker if Rooney chooses not to come.

Given Mourinho's crafty nature, though, one must take The Special One's words with a hefty grain of salt.

Is this the end of the saga, as Chelsea admits defeat, or just a way for the Blues to find leverage and prod Rooney into acting out?

Rooney Starts Against Chelsea

After months of being linked with a move to Chelsea, Wayne Rooney got his first start of the season for Manchester United against the Blues on Monday.

The striker was lively throughout the encounter, as he came close to creating the winner on multiple occasions before the match ended in a scoreless draw.

One might have expected to see Rooney sit this match out or perhaps play a bit below par.

However, the Englishman's performance should give strong hope to United fans wanting to see him stay at Old Trafford.

If nothing else, though, it proves the extreme professionalism that Rooney possesses.
