The New York Giants and New England Patriots have combined to win five of the last 12 Super Bowls, and both teams are expected to be championship contenders on a yearly basis.

When these two proud franchises square off on Thursday, Aug. 29, however, many of the players you'll see battling it out on the gridiron won't be parts of the teams' plans in 2013.

Both teams must pare down their rosters to 53 men by Saturday, Aug. 31. Players who are on the roster bubble will be given one more shot to prove worthy of the final spots, and as such, there will likely be more mistakes than during regular-season games.

Here's what you need to know about the upcoming preseason tilt featuring the Giants and Patriots.

Will Tim Tebow Secure a Roster Spot?

Tebow appears perilously close to being released as part of the Patriots' final roster cuts to get down to 53 players.

Through two preseason games, the former Heisman Trophy winner only managed to complete 26.3 percent of his passes for 54 yards—including an atrocious outing in Game 2, in which he passed for negative-one yards.

According to a report from the Associated Press (via USA Today), "Tebow is expected to see considerable playing time Thursday night against the New York Giants in the Patriots' final exhibition game."

After sitting out the team's third preseason game, this will be Tebow's last chance to prove he deserves to be a part of New England's long-term plans.

Prediction

If the starters were playing, I'd lean toward the Patriots winning this game.

However, since the bulk of action will be contested by players who may not make it on the teams' final rosters, I'm taking the visiting team to win the game.

David Carr and Ryan Nassib give me more confidence than Ryan Mallett and Tebow, and New England's depth on defense—particularly in the secondary—is suspect.

Final Score: Giants Win 24-20
