Manchester United-Arsenal: Are United Headed for the Title?

Jeff HarbertApr 13, 2008

After defeating Arsenal 2-1 at Old Trafford, Manchester United are now on course for their second consecutive league title.

The Red Devils were poor in the first half and went behind shortly after the restart. But the defending champions clawed a goal back courtesy of Ronaldo’s penalty and went ahead midway through the second half through Owen Hargreaves’s spectacular free-kick.

Never again did Manchester United look like conceding a goal and surrendering their lead.

Its games like these that test a side’s championship credentials, and Manchester United proved they have more than what it takes to end the season as champions.

Ferguson’s troops did well to stand up to the test even if at times it looked like they were going to stumble. Edwin Van der Sar was magnificent in goal all game long and deserves recognition for keeping his side in the hunt for the three-points.

In the absence of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand proved why he is one of the best defenders in the world. The England captain was at hand on multiple occasions to scuffle out any danger the Gunners created.

Sir Alex Ferguson brought on Carlos Tevez and Anderson soon after Ronaldo’s equalizer, and it was their introduction which tipped the game in United’s favor.

Anderson was involved all across the pitch, whether it was scuffling out the danger at his own end or embarking on pulsating runs into Arsenal’s half.

Tevez provided support for Wayne Rooney, who was also brilliant all game long and unlucky not to get on the score sheet.

But that will matter very little to the English striker as his side open up a six point gap at the summit of the English Premier League and in the process eliminate Arsenal’s faint title ambitions.

Are the Red Devils headed for their second consecutive league triumph?

The title is certainly theirs to lose now.
