Thiago Alcantara is nearing a Bayern Munich return after the club confirmed he has returned to training.
Alcantara has been nursing an ankle injury but will soon boost a midfield that recently lost Bastian Schweinsteiger:
From Bayern's official Instagram account:
If there is a team in Europe that can cope with the loss of a player like Alcantara, it is Bayern Munich, as Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez, Toni Kroos, Mario Goetze and even Thomas Mueller can provide cover in central midfield.
Alcantara was playing well for Bayern before he was injured, making two appearances in Bundesliga play. According to WhoScored.com, he earned a 6.6 match rating coming off the bench in a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt and a 6.92 rating after earning the start against Nurnberg in a 2-0 win.
Of course, dealing with injury is nothing new for Alcantara, who missed a chunk of last season remedying a knee injury.
Alcantara was signed from Barcelona this summer after Bayern Munich triggered his €25 million release clause, beating out interested suitors Manchester United. Just 22 years of age, Alcantara is thought by many to be the future replacement for Xavi in the Spanish national team's midfield.
The comparisons are apt, as Alcantara is a savvy, technical player who can quickly unlock defenses with his vision and precise, incisive passing. It was that element of his game that Guardiola was keen to bring to an already stacked Bayern Munich side this summer.
Now, that experiment will be put on hold as Alcantara is on the mend.
