Aston Villa 0
Liverpool 1 (Daniel Sturridge)
MOTM: Kolo Toure
A match of two halves, yes, but a match of very few real chances despite the utter domination of each team in either half. Daniel Sturridge's expertly taken goal in the first half earns the three points, with Christian Benteke forcing a big save from Simon Mignolet late on.
Villa's good start by beating Arsenal last week is slightly tempered by two defeats since then, but they have little—result aside—to worry about for this season on viewing of these three games.
Liverpool on the other hand show a steel and resilience not too often seen over the past three seasons to record their second win in two games, the first time they've managed that at the start of a new campaign in five years.
Full time at Villa Park
Aston Villa 0 Liverpool 1
90+3'—The ref blows his whistle as the ball goes into Liverpool's area, and it's because Agbonlahor was offside. That might be it now.
90+1'—Villa pile forward once more down the right and Tonev escapes Jose Enrique, before overhitting his cross out for a throw in. Two minutes remain.
Three minutes added on
89'—Final minute of the game—Sturridge wants a penalty but the ref says no! Okore's back-header is short and the striker reaches the ball before Guzan, but the American got a single hand to the ball just before he clattered into Sturridge. Big call from the ref.
87'—Yellow card for Lucas. He goes for a header in Villa's half, Villa break behind him and he's always chasing back, ending in a sliding foul from behind. Another free kick chance for the home team to put the ball in the box—but Tonev opts to shoot! A 30-yard drive flies well wide of Liverpool's goal.
86'—Huge save! Helenius flicks the header on over the defence to Benteke who finally has room for a clear shot on goal—but his drilled effort is really well saved by Simon Mignolet.
85'—Into the final five minutes and Liverpool still lead Villa by the single goal. Lucas has been woefully off the pace in this half and is caught in possession again; compared with the dominant first-half display, this latest 40 minutes has been atrocious in terms of passing and controlling the ball.
83'—Villa sub: Nicklas Helenius on for Westwood.
Liverpool sub: Joe Allen on for Coutinho.
82'—Lucas again with the individual error as he takes a heavy touch and lets Luna into space down the left. His cross is cut out once more, but the Reds living dangerously at times here.
81'—Nothing further from Rodgers at the moment in terms of subs. He's only made one and rather appears to be hoping Liverpool see out the result rather than doing anything to make sure they do.
79'—Goodness. Mignolet plays short to Agger who is quickly under pressure and returns the favour, and his keeper lacks the control to deal with the ball and it bounces behind for a corner. Bit of an escape for Liverpool.
78'—Johnson loses the ball very high up the field after a silly attempt at a dribble, and Villa counter. Antonio Luna commits defenders and gets himself into a good position up the other end, but his cross is blocked and cleared by Gerrard.
75'—Big chance! The ball is floated to Benteke but Toure beats him in the air, only for the ball to land at Agbonlahor's feet—and he volleys the ball wide with a first-time shot. As good as Villa have had in this half, despite plenty more possession.
74'—We're inching toward the final quarter of an hour now and the game is rather open now. Aston Villa having plenty of possession and trying to get the ball forward quickly, with Liverpool restricted to intermittent counter attacks, though perhaps lacking the pace to do so at times.
72'—Aston Villa sub: Aleksander Tonev on for Andi Weimann
70'—Benteke gets up to head at goal from a Villa corner—but aims his effort wide of the near post.
68'—Liverpool sub: Aly Cissokho on for Iago Aspas
66'—Gerrard makes a good block on El Ahmadi after Luna squares the ball to him on the edge of the area. Still Villa pressing for the equaliser and Liverpool making runs on the break now.
64'—Aston Villa sub: Karim El Ahmadi on for Matthew Lowton
62'—Great play from Liverpool—and shocking from Glen Johnson. Aspas and Coutinho work space down the right and let Johnson race into space down the right channel, but with two players to cross to in the middle he opts to lash a first-time shot at goal, and slices miles wide of the goal.
61'—Poor challenge from Lowton who goes through the back of Coutinho and it's a yellow card, the fifth of the game. Liverpool trying to keep hold of the ball over the past few minutes to put the game back under their own control.
59'—Really poor from Jose Enrique. He delays his pass with Aspas making the run, then loses the ball and is out of position with Weimann running in behind him. Henderson is covering and concedes the corner, which Liverpool eventually clear.
