Arsenal supporters have been looking for a big-name addition all summer, and the latest rumours show that one might be coming before the transfer window shuts.

According to Jack De Menezes of The Independent, the Gunners are considering a bid for Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema. Although the club failed to bring in his former teammate Gonzalo Higuain, the feeling is that the team's most recent result will help acquire top players.

On Wednesday, Arsenal defeated Fenerbahce 3-0 in the first leg of the Champions League playoff. This result virtually assures the squad's place in the group stage, something that will attract top players.

ESPN also reported that the club is willing to spend £40 million on the striker. This should be enough to cause Real to part with the top player.

If this deal is completed, it would be a huge boost to Arsenal heading into the bulk of the season. Benzema is an elite forward who has been one of the best offensive players in the world at both the club and international level for the past few years.

After scoring 27 goals in La Liga two years ago, he became more of a distributor last season while scoring 11 to go with 11 assists. His ability to create opportunities for both himself and others is something that would transform Arsenal's attack for the better.

Additionally, the transfer would be a mental boost to the squad after the players were forced to see their rivals get better throughout the summer.

Just as importantly, this type of move would be enough to please the fans after a relatively weak transfer period. The Arsenal Supporters' Trust sent a message to ownership that they are not happy about how things have gone in the past couple of months, according to BBC Sport.

It has gotten even worse after Arsene Wenger admitted defeat in the pursuit for Luis Suarez, according to ESPNHowever, the manager did seem hopeful about more activity:

The transfer market starts for me now and a lot of activity will happen between now and September 2.

From August 21 until September 2 you have 12 days, so a lot will happen. It starts now and it is like a poker game. People hold their cards as long as possible and see what is happening out there. In the end, they go for decisions.

If he is wrong, it is certain to make fans even angrier. On the other hand, an addition like Benzema would certainly silence his critics in a hurry.

The forward would be a huge mental and physical boost to Arsenal and it would give them a chance to win the Premier League title. The pressure is now on Wenger to make sure this transfer is completed.
