Barry Sanders football career had an inconspicuous beginning. In high school, Sanders didn't even start at running back his senior year until the fourth game, but managed to go off for 1,417 in the last seven. Even still, he only received three offers to play college football, settling on Oklahoma State.

At OSU, he had to wait his turn behind future Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas for his first two years, before finally getting to start his Junior season. That season he only set the NCAA records for rushing yards in a season, with 2,628, and touchdowns, with 37. After that he left for the NFL where he was taken third by the draft by the Detroit Lions.

He played for the Lions, his only team, for 10 years before retiring unexpectedly, still very much considered an elite back. But in his short time in the NFL, he left a lasting impression.

Highlights

4 of 6

Barry Sanders always seemed like he was playing a different game than everyone else. He moved and changed directions in the blink of an eye while everyone else seemed like they were moving in slow motion.

Going one on one against Barry was a defender's worst nightmare.

Top 10 Plays

Picking your favorite Sanders play is like picking a favorite child, but I'm personally partial to the run against the Bears on Thanksgiving day.

Breaking Tackles

Even though Sanders was known for being elusive, he was also incredibly skilled at staying on his feet.

Look at him run into a mass of defenders and escape effortlessly.
