Live Premier League opening day action
Liverpool 1-0 Stoke City (full time)
—Daniel Sturridge, 37' (1-0)
—Simon Mignolet saves 88th minute penalty from Jon Walters
Liverpool win the opening game of the 2013-14 Premier League season after a 1-0 victory over Stoke City. The Reds created by far the better and more numerous opportunities, but Asmir Begovic was in exemplary form to keep them at bay. Only Daniel Sturridge, with a long-range drilled strike, managed to beat him, with Kolo Toure and Jordan Henderson both denied by the woodwork.
Stoke also hit the bar through Robert Huth and spurned a chance to take a point when Jon Walters' late, late penalty was saved by Simon Mignolet, who also saved Kenwyne Jones' rebound shot. First blood to Liverpool for this season as they get off to a great start, while Mark Hughes is defeated in his first game in charge.
