Liverpool vs. Stoke City: Premier League Live Score, Highlights, Recap
Live Premier League opening day action
Liverpool 1-0 Stoke City (full time)
—Daniel Sturridge, 37' (1-0)
—Simon Mignolet saves 88th minute penalty from Jon Walters
Liverpool win the opening game of the 2013-14 Premier League season after a 1-0 victory over Stoke City. The Reds created by far the better and more numerous opportunities, but Asmir Begovic was in exemplary form to keep them at bay. Only Daniel Sturridge, with a long-range drilled strike, managed to beat him, with Kolo Toure and Jordan Henderson both denied by the woodwork.
Stoke also hit the bar through Robert Huth and spurned a chance to take a point when Jon Walters' late, late penalty was saved by Simon Mignolet, who also saved Kenwyne Jones' rebound shot. First blood to Liverpool for this season as they get off to a great start, while Mark Hughes is defeated in his first game in charge.
Liverpool: Mignolet; Johnson, Toure, Agger, Jose Enrique; Lucas, Gerrard, Henderson; Aspas (Sterling), Coutinho, Sturridge.
Stoke City: Begovic; Cameron, Huth, Shawcross, Pieters; Whelan (Adam), Nzonzi, Wilson, Walters, Etherington (Pennant); Crouch (Jones).
Phew! That was a finish and a half! What a cracking start to the new Premier League season, and the Reds take an early lead at the top of the table with their first opening day victory for five years.

90+4'—We've already had a full minute more than the allocated added time. Liverpool have possession and will surely take three points now.
90+3'—Jones flicks a long goal kick on to Walters, but Mignolet is off his line again to gather the ball. Mere seconds left.
90+2'—Gerrard wins another corner for Liverpool and we have 30 seconds to play.
90+1'—Sturridge and Gerrard go crunching into challenges and then Coutinho fires in from 20 yards. It's deflected, goes the other way and just misses the near post.
Three minutes added on
In fact he's slapped Coutinho, grabbed his shirt and then slapped Lucas round the head. Should have been a straight red card.
89'—Nzonzi loses his head and starts pushing and shoving, and he's already been booked. Martin Atkinson is having a word with the Stoke midfielder to calm him down.
Mignolet dives low to his right and parries away the penalty brilliantly, then bounces back up and makes a terrific block from Kenwyne Jones' rebound effort. Great goalkeeping and the Belgian is hugely cheered by the Kop.
SIMON MIGNOLET SAVES JON WALTERS' PENALTY ON HIS LIVERPOOL DEBUT!
Agger jumps behind Walters and with arms and legs up in the air, the ball strikes him on the arm—penalty signalled.
Penalty to Stoke City!
87'—Sterling concedes a free kick for a high boot and it's another free kick chance for Stoke to put the ball in the box. Adam stands over it, with Huth and Shawcross now aided by Jones in the area.
85'—Gerrard frees Sterling down the left with an excellent pass but Stoke quickly get seven defenders back once more, crowding out Coutinho and Sturridge before they can shoot cleanly.
83'—We're well inside the final 10 minutes now and Liverpool so far defending resolutely. They break with Sturridge looking for Henderson, but Pieters gets back to slide the ball clear inside his own box.
81'—Charlie Adam opts for a shot from the halfway line, trying to chip Mignolet! The keeper back pedals and tips the ball over the corssbar, and the Reds manage to clear the immediate danger.
80'—Stoke sub: Kenwyne Jones on for Peter Crouch
79'—Another chance goes begging. The corner bobbles and breaks to Johnson but instead of shooting first time, he takes a touch and gives Begovic the chance to smother the ball at his near post.
78'—What a hit! Gerrard goes direct for goal from a 25-yard free kick; it's heading for the top corner but Begovic leaps across to palm it wide once more.
76'—Sterling frees Sturridge and he runs on the outside before firing a low cross-shot from the right, but it deflects off a Stoke defender's heel and fails to fall to a Red shirt. Stoke pressing higher up the pitch now, Liverpool holding a deeper line, and a little anxiety around the place whenever Stoke come forward.
75'—Toure is shown a yellow card for a late slide inside Stoke's half. Into the final 15 now.
74'—Kolo Toure rampages forward after picking up a loose ball and he draws the defenders away from Daniel Sturridge, who takes the opportunity to whack in a shot from 25 yards. It's off target this time though and the Reds will have to try again.
72'—That sub means a reshuffle for Liverpool, with Coutinho moving central behind Sturridge and Sterling playing from the left. Henderson continues on the right.
71'—Liverpool sub: Iago Aspas replaced by Raheem Sterling
