Any residual benefits of the Cardinals' 14-inning win on Tuesday were nowhere to be found on Wednesday. The Pirates returned their lead to three games in the NL Central with a 5-0 win over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Cardinals starter Shelby Miller (11-8) gave up two solo homers in the second and the Pirates got three in the fourth, two of them unearned thanks to an error by third baseman David Freese. The Cardinals had just four hits – two of them in the second – off Pirates starter Francisco Liriano (13-5) and didn't get a runner to second until Matt Carpenter's one-out double in the ninth. Double plays in the second, fourth and seventh innings quashed potential scoring opportunities. Liriano threw just 94 pitches.
