Jose Contreras has seen better days with the Chicago White Sox.
With a 0-5 start on the season, Contreras was thought to be sent to the bullpen. Kenny Williams thought enough was enough, and optioned Contreras to AAA Charlotte.
Clayton Richard is taking Contreras' spot in the rotation, after he has seen much success out of the bullpen for the White Sox this season (4.32 ERA in 12 games).
Richard got into a little trouble tonight, exiting in the fourth inning after a two-inning performance against Texas, giving up four earned runs. Richard had eight career starts going into tonight, as he filled in the same role for Contreras last season when he went down with a knee injury.
This now means that the White Sox rotation has three lefties (Buehrle and Danks) to compliment two right-handers (Floyd and Colon).
Filling in for Contreras on the roster is Jimmy Gobble, who was previously with Kansas City, a left-hander. He's been more of a relief pitcher as of late, but started his career as a starter. Gobble has had 43 career starts with just over a five earned-run average.
The White Sox need to get more consistent starting pitching, as the bullpen will not keep bailing the Sox out. Is Richard the answer? I think not.
Kenny will have to get on the phone with other clubs.
