Florida Basketball: Does Gators Star Patric Young Have an NFL Future?
Florida big man Patric Young is a borderline NBA prospect. If basketball doesn't work out for Young, maybe he should try his luck at football.
Young worked out recently with some Gator football players, and he appears to be a natural as a pass-catcher. (Quarterbacking, however, is not in his future.)
Young also has football in his genes. His father, Robert, played tight end at Bethune-Cookman and then professionally for the Jacksonville Bulls and Tampa Bay Bandits of the United States Football League.
Three of the best tight ends in the NFL—Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez and Jimmy Graham—all played college basketball. Graham only played one year of college football before the New Orleans Saints took a chance on him.
Not convinced yet? Watch the way the Gators train their basketball players in the offseason. Young has the strength.
OK, now I'll offer up my amateur scouting opinion: Young is probably too tall at 6'9" and would have a tough time getting any kind of separation with his speed. Graham, at 6'7", is the tallest of the former basketball players now thriving in the NFL.
You have to at least love the Gators incorporating some fun workouts in the offseason. Young is also a natural on camera. He could also have a future as a game show host.
As for now, Young has one season left of eligibility on the hardwood, where he's one of the best returning centers in college basketball. Until then, Young should keep the videos coming. If nothing else, they're entertaining, and if I'm Florida football coach Will Muschamp, I'm at least intrigued.
