Roma Transfer News and Rumors Tracker Week of August 5

0 of 5

Roma's aggressive transfer policy continues into August. Their desire to make a statement in Serie A and make a push for a spot in the Champions League has seen the arrival of Gervinho in the capital.

With Gervinho, the latest of seven players who have been bought by Roma this summer, the club now faces the tough job at deciding who should be released.

Here's the latest from the Eternal City.

Gervinho in

So, it's finally a done deal. Gervinho has signed for Roma for €8 million.

It's a deal that should please all parties. Obviously, at Arsenal, the Ivorian did not impress. Meanwhile, under manager Rudi Garcia at Lille, Gervinho was one of the Ligue 1's true stars.

The striker was clearly pleased upon arriving in Rome, where he's already begun to train. "I'm very happy," he said, as quoted by Football Italia. "It was my dream."

Within days he should be reunited with Garcia in America, where Roma continue their tour of friendlies with upcoming games against Toronto FC and Chelsea

Marquinho out

With the arrival of Gervinho, Roma has a surplus of non-EU players. These include Leandro Castan, Junior Tallo and Marquinho. One of these three will therefore have to go.

Who this "someone" will be remains up for debate. In fact, as Il Corriere Dello Sport reports (Italian), Roma's president James Pallotta invited the rest of the club's management to his home in Boston to discuss this issue.

Marquinho has been linked to Inter in the past few weeks, according to Tuttosport (Italian). The Brazilian midfielder's agent, however, has admitted that nothing is concrete about the possible transfer.

"We talked about Marquinho with Inter in the past," the agent said, as quoted by Yahoo!Sport. "At this time no one has appeared to speak with me. I do not know if anyone from Inter could have contacted Roma."

Castan out

According to the IB Times, Chelsea have targeted Castan as a possible backup for David Luiz, who's been confirmed by Jose Mourinho.

If Luiz were to lend some truth to the transfer speculation that has him linked to several clubs like Bayern Munich or Barcelona (as per IB Times), then Chelsea might very well make a formal bid for Castan. However, they are not the only club interested in the Jim Carrey lookalike.

Flamengo was looking to sign Castan in the past, as Sky Sports reports. However, Flamengo's Director of Football has dismissed their continued pursuit of the defender.

"He is a great defender and we are evaluating his situation, but there are no actual negotiations for his signing at the moment," said the Director, as quoted by the IB Times.

Castan, meanwhile, knows that he was a regular fixture for Roma last season, and has already begun to impress alongside new signing Mehdi Benatia.

"I have three more years of contract with Roma," Castan said, as quoted by the IB Times. "I don't even worry much about the enquiries. My father handles my career, so I leave everything in his hands. Now I just want to rest, without paying much attention to speculation."

Tallo out

4 of 5

Despite impressing against the MLS All-Stars, it looks all the more likely that it will be Junior Tallo who makes way for Gervinho.

There is simply too many quality attacking players in Roma's squad. Besides Totti and now Gervinho, Marco Borriello and Pablo Daniel Osvaldo remain in contention alongside the confirmed Mattia Destro and Erik Lamela.

The release of Tallo would be the most straightforward solution to the over-crowding up front and the question of non-EU citizenship.

    Where Tallo goes remains unknown.

Osvaldo out

In a peculiar change of events, striker Marco Borriello has found himself with Roma in their friendly tour of America. Doubt has therefore again arisen over the place of Pablo Daniel Osvaldo in the squad.

After having been almost certain to leave the club, Borriello is newly confirmed by Rudi Garcia with Osvaldo being linked to Inter.

Mazzarri's Nerazzurri look avidly for replacements after a disastrous preseason in which they have yet to show any good form or goal-scoring prowess. More recently, they lost to Valencia 4-0.

As Football Italia reports, Osvaldo's agent has claimed the striker “would certainly like to play for Inter and they are a possibility."

He continued to state (as per Football Italia):

“What truth is there in rumors of the Nerazzurri’s interest in Osvaldo? Let’s say they are a possibility...He would certainly like to play for Inter, but I cannot say more on what contact there has been because I am in Argentina and he is in America.”
