Paul Doyle of The Guardian eluded to the possibility of the Blues replacing Torres with the likes of Rooney or even Luis Suarez. However, per Jack De Menezes of the Independent, Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho has designs on keeping Torres while still making a run at Rooney.
While many may believe Torres' days as a top-notch striker are done, the Blues could see an improvement in his form with another formidable weapon at the club.
One question worth examining is: how much of the 29-year old's struggles are due to mediocre play from his teammates and increased attention from opposing teams?
The Chelsea midfielders weren't spectacular last year. The group was led by long-time standout, but declining force, Frank Lampard. He scored 18 goals in all matches last season, but 15 of them came in the Premier League. Torres netted only eight in these matches.
As great as Lampard's career has been, he no longer possesses the athleticism to be an elite box-to-box midfielder. This could be impacting Torres' production as he isn't getting the same opportunities he once did.
Teaming Rooney with Torres could make both players better.
Rooney could take a ton of pressure off Torres if the former plays as a second striker. Rooney has experience in this role with Manchester United. Mourinho recently told ESPN.co.uk.com he would cater the club's style around Torres' talents.
This would be a smart move in that direction.
More than anything, Torres needs a confidence boost. If another high-profile, more aggressive star joins him at Stamford Bridge, all of the spotlight may not be beaming down on him throughout the season.
Rooney's goal-scoring prowess creates an on-field presence that opponents can't ignore. If he's willing, he can help Torres out of his funk by creating better opportunities for him.
Likewise, Rooney's fierceness can help hide deficiencies of players like Juan Mata who offers little in the way of defending. Rooney would ultimately get recognized as the heart and soul of the club, but Torres could regain his confidence and goal-scoring eye.
This potential high-profile pairing that could work well for the Blues.
