Alberto Del Rio to Face Christian and What It Means for SummerSlam

One more match!

Isn’t that the mantra Christian has been preaching like it’s a mantra that must be realized? Well now the mantra may have become a reality. After defeating Randy Orton in a Triple Threat match with Rob Van Dam, the two-time world heavyweight champion will have his chance again against Alberto Del Rio at SummerSlam.

It was one of the better Triple Threat matches we have seen in some time.

Could this match for the World title be his swan song, or will it be the start of something big for the veteran, who missed 10 months with a shoulder injury?

While I, for one, want this to be something big for the WWE Superstar, should he win, it will only be a temporary reign.

Time has not been good to Christian of late. While he has come back with a vengeance, it means this is only a transitional period in the WWE. How can the company expect someone like Christian to defeat Alberto Del Rio (his title reign is actually inconsequential right now) and hold the title for an extended period of time?

Rob Van Dam is waiting. Cody Rhodes is waiting. Wade Barrett is waiting. Damien Sandow is waiting.

You get the idea.

While the WWE title has more of a shelf life with John Cena holding the strap and Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan and CM Punk chasing him, the younger generation of this company needs to be given an opportunity to shine on the Blue Brand. Christian bridges that gap.

There are certain things the company can count on when it comes to giving a good show. Kane will make everyone look good. Randy Orton will excite but not change his persona. Chris Jericho helps younger stars get over. And Christian is one of the most underrated wrestlers of all time. He cares about the craft.

And while age is creeping up on him (soon to be 40), the WWE has enough confidence in him to put him in a position to touch gold again. Should this be his last best match, hopefully it will be a good one. If momentum is any indication of how this contest “should” go, it will be entertaining and better than expected,

And above everything else, it will show Christian was the right choice to carry the strap one last time.
