Barcelona is reportedly looking to make an improvement to their defense by making a bid on Chelsea centre-back David Luiz.
As Wayne Veysey of Goal.com reports, Barcelona has made a £25 million bid on the defender. Veysey also notes that the Catalan giants have had their eye on Luiz for a while and have had previous bids turned down.
It remains to be seen what Chelsea will do with this bid, but it appears reasonable that this time Barca will not be turned away.
Playing into that statement is Veysey also reporting that new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is not sold on Luiz and wouldn't mind going in a different direction.
That is good news for Barca, as they must be hoping this bid goes through. While the club made one of the biggest splashes of this transfer window by adding Brazilian star Neymar into the mix, that did nothing to address the real weakness of the defending La Liga champs. That need is found in the back end.
While it is understandable the club made a play for the brilliant talent of Neymar, there is still a defensive hole.
With the departure of Eric Abidal, Barca needs to help bolster the back four, and they could use someone to compete with Carles Puyol. At 35, his time as an elite defender is running short.
As for Luiz's style, which has drawn criticism and raves, it would be a nice fit with Barcelona. Luiz is not the most defensive-minded player. He likes to wander up the pitch and force the action. This can leave the back line vulnerable, but it can also create scoring opportunities.
He has the athleticism to cover plenty of ground, and he also has the size to put a body on the opposition. And his power makes him dangerous on the attack. He is a real threat from a distance when his team is on the attack or in a penalty situation.
As for his defense, or lack thereof, Barcelona's best defense remains their ability to control possession. This is perfect for Luiz, and Luiz is perfect for Barcelona.
