Chelsea has remained pretty quiet on the transfer front—well, outside of its rumoured pursuit of that Wayne Rooney fella—but the team could turn to Bayern Munich to fill a need, as the Blues apparently have eyes for midfielder Luiz Gustavo.

From Dave Kidd of the Mirror:

Chelsea are ready to table a £15 million bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo, writes Dave Kidd of the Sunday People.

Returning boss Jose Mourinho has prioritised the signing of a holding midfield player for the Stamford Bridge club.

He has doubts about John Obi Mikel’s ability to play in that role.

Hey, what about David Luiz playing in that role? Couldn't the big Brazilian see more time in the midfield given how much he enjoys getting forward in the attack in the first place?

It's something Rafa Benitez played around with last year, though Luiz's natural position is at centre-back. Meanwhile, Gustavo looks like he'll be the odd man out in an absurdly stacked midfield at Bayern Munich that added Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara this summer.

Gustavo was already finding playing time hard to come by, starting just 19 games (with 32 total appearances) for the Bavarians in Bundesliga and Champions League play. According to, he did register a very solid 7.08 match rating in Bundesliga play, however, a very solid mark.

Gustavo can't afford to sit on the bench. While he played the defensive midfielder role for Brazil in the Confederations Cup, he made five appearances and earned a 7.13 match rating from But if he doesn't get regular playing time this season, he could easily lose his starting gig on a deep Brazilian national team.

Gustavo would give Chelsea a physical presence in the middle of the pitch and make up for players like Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar, who don't always double back defensively. Heck, he might even provide nice cover for Luiz every time he pushes forward and joins the attack.

This move would make plenty of sense for the Blues, even if £15 million is a bit on the steep side for the 26-year-old. It would especially make sense if Chelsea shook free some cash by selling Luiz back to Bayern Munich in what is being rumoured as a shocking £40 million move

One Luiz for another (and some cash)—hey, crazier things have happened this summer.

While it's probably unlikely Chelsea will get rid of its electrifying centre-back, Gustavo is a target the Blues should seriously consider adding.

Well, if they can't get that Rooney guy, that is.
