The potential NCAA violation is a serious one. If it is found that the star defensive end, who is projected by many to be the No. 1 pick in next year's NFL draft, did have illegal contact with an agent, he could be ruled ineligible for the upcoming season.
South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier recently touched on conversations he has had with Clowney regarding potentially ruinous NCAA infractions to ESPN (via Goodbread):
"All of our conversations (with Clowney) are wait until you have played your last game at South Carolina," Spurrier said. "When the bowl game is over this coming season he's free to accept any amount of money anybody wants to give him. But until then he has to be a student-athlete like all the other guys or he's not going to be eligible. He's done a good job of knowing that."
As Laken Litman of USA Today reports, there is no rule against Clowney meeting with an agent, provided the player pays for his own transportation and meal. So long as they aren't establishing an agreement for representation, no breach of the NCAA bylaws has occurred.
Since starting Roc Nation Sports, Jay-Z has managed to sign Robinson Cano, Geno Smith, Kevin Durant, Victor Cruz and the WNBA's Skylar Diggins to his agency. Considering Clowney's high-profile nature, it should be no surprise that he's at least on Roc Nation's radar.
The loss of Clowney for the season would be a huge blow to South Carolina and college football in general.
The 6'6", 275-pound defensive end is one of the most electric talents around and recently won the 2013 ESPY for Best Play for his iconic hit against Michigan running back Vincent Smith.
