Scott Speed has had a miserable time at the Darlington track so far this weekend.  He wrecked in Cup practice and had to go to a back up car.

Speed tentatively took the track for qualifying and ended up as one of the two who failed to qualify for the race.  Both Speed and Jeremy Mayfield were destined to head back home.

But there is now news Speed will be in the Southern 500 this evening.  He will be taking the wheel of Joe Nemechek's No. 87 car.

Nemechek has been running his own team basically out of his own pocket.  When the Red Bull team approached him to run Speed in the car, the payment to do so must have been too good for this struggling team to pass up.

Another sweet part to the deal is that Nemechek will get to keep all of the owner points that Speed earns in the race.

Both Red Bull and Nemechek team members were in the process of getting the car through NASCAR technical inspection and ready for the race.

While the Red Bull colors will not be on the car, Scott Speed will get his chance behind the wheel at the "Lady in Black" after all.
