UFC on Fox 8: Predicting the Fight Night Bonuses
On Saturday night, fight fans will be treated to incredible action as part of UFC on FOX 8. There, the Zuffa boys offer FOX viewers a championship fight when Demetrious Johnson looks to defend his flyweight title against contender John Moraga.
Perhaps it is the never-slowing pace of the flyweight division that Dana White and Co. wish to showcase. After all, the frantic action provided by the UFC's smallest weight class has delivered some of the most consistently entertaining fights of the last 15 months.
Will it be the flyweights who steal the show on Saturday night? Or will the evening's other stars be taking home the lucrative fight night bonuses?
Here is a look at the front-runners to win Knockout of the Night, Submission of the Night and Fight of the Night at UFC on Fox 8.
Knockout of the Night
There are a handful of good choices when picking the leading candidate for UFC on Fox 8. In fact, there are a slew of knockout artists who find themselves competing on this card, including:
- Melvin Guillard
- Daron Cruickshank
- Yves Edwards
- Robbie Lawler
However, none of these men will take home the evening's award for Knockout of the Night. That honor will fall on co-main event fighter Jake Ellenberger.
Ellenberger brings his dynamite-filled hands into the Octagon for the 11th time when he meets overhyped welterweight prospect Rory MacDonald.
Sporting a UFC record of 8-2, Ellenberger's powerful punches have helped him either defeat or drop every single opponent he has met. He enters this fight with 18 professional knockouts to his credit.
Apparently oddsmakers are buying into MacDonald's hype. Betting odds currently have The Juggernaut as a 2-1 underdog according to BestFightOdds.com, despite the fact that his opponent has never defeated a ranked opponent in his career.
Mark my words: His chin will be found, and he will drop like a sack of potatoes.
Submission of the Night
UFC on Fox 8 features a few high-level submission fighters. Cases for Michael Chiesa, Mac Danzig and Ed Herman could be made in this category. After all, both men are excellent grapplers with enough submission prowess to pick up stoppages in more than 60 percent of their victories.
Of the bunch, Ultimate Fighter winner Danzig is mostly likely to earn Submission of the Night honors.
Danzig used his submission skills to soar through the sixth season of TUF, and in his first fight after the tournament he was able to secure a rear-naked choked victory against jiu-jitsu ace Mark Bocek.
Opponent Melvin Guillard is not only susceptible to submission losses, but apparently drawn to them. In fact, nine of his 12 career losses have come by way of tapout. Not only that, but eight of those came in the first round.
Fight of the Night
If you don't want to miss any of the action of UFC on Fox 8's main event, it will be in your best interest to DVR the contest and watch it in slow motion.
UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson has earned his reputation as being the fastest man in MMA. With tremendous footwork and agility, "Mighty Mouse" has an unrivaled ability to get in and out with striking combinations.
If opponent John Moraga can grab ahold of the champion, he is a dangerous foe capable of finishing the fight with both his submission skills or his powerful elbow strikes.
In any case, the championship matchup is the front-runner for Fight of the Night due to its never-slowing pace and unpredictability.
